Carmel Apple Pop Surprise!
Being a dental assistant has many unique challenges and surprises. I love being a dental assistant and love orthodontics. One of the funniest things I can ever remember happening was getting an emergency phone call from a panicked parent. It seems her daughter, who was about 9 years old, had being sucking on a carmel apple pop and it somehow had "melted" to the appliance in the roof of her mouth. She had a thingy mabob in called a Quad-Helix and the sucker was completely melted in and around all the grooves of the wire and it could not be pulled out.
I met them discreetly through the side door and sat them in the exam room for privacy. The poor little one had a scarf covering over her head and face because she was sooooo embarrassed to have it hanging out of her mouth and she was also gagging quite ferociously with carmel hanging down her throat.
Experienced RDA to the rescue! Grabbed a pair of band removing pliers and in 2 shakes of a lambs tail had the offending apparatus out! Well, I can tell you I was her very favorite assistant after that. We took pictures of the appliance with the sucker stuck to for our "Wall of Shame" board. Beware of the carmel apple pop surprise!!!!
