WHAT DO RUBBER BANDS ACTUALLY DO FOR YOUR BRACES?

Wearing rubber bands improves the fit of your upper and lower teeth and/or jaws - the bite. Rubber bands align your bite and are very important for the bite-fixing phase of orthodontic treatment, which is usually the longest and most difficult part of the whole process. Our high-tech braces and wires will straighten your teeth relatively quickly, it is the aligning/fixing of the bite (the way your teeth and jaws fit together - "overbite" correction for example, as shown in picture to the right) that usually takes longer and determines when you're ready to get the braces off. Your full cooperation and commitment with the rubber bands is required and will lead to the best possible orthodontic result in the shortest amount of time. Yes, rubber band wear is vital to successful treatment, so always strictly follow the instructions and regiment we give you for wearing your elastics.

You should wear your elastics constantly, twenty-four hours a day including when you eat a snack, play, and sleep, unless otherwise instructed, taking them out only to brush, floss, put new elastics in, and very occasionally to eat. Most of the time you should eat with your elastics in and replace them with fresh ones after the meal. In fact, when you are eating you're really putting your rubber bands to work and your teeth will move even faster! But, if they really get in your way during a big meal you may need to remove them, even though we urge you to keep them in if you can, especially during casual snacking. You should also wear them when you sleep. Every morning, discard the previous day's elastics and replace them with fresh elastics from the packet we have provided for you. If you play sports keep your elastics in unless you need to wear a mouth-guard. After removing your mouth-guard, put the elastics back in.

You should change your elastics 3-4 times a day, at the very least every 12 hours, even if they are not broken, because after a while they lose their strength and elasticity. It usually takes a couple of days to get used to putting in your elastics and at first you might need to use a mirror, but after a little practice you’ll be able to hook them up with your eyes closed. If for any reason you run out or lose your supply of elastics, call or email the office and we will have a new supply waiting for you at the reception desk, or we’ll mail them to you.

Before you leave the office, be absolutely sure you understand where to hook the elastics.

To help you with this, before you leave we will give you a handout that has a diagram indicating what teeth you need to hook the rubber bands to. Placing them incorrectly can be even worse than not wearing them at all because your teeth might move in the wrong/opposite direction. If you ever have any questions on how to wear your elastics or may have lost the handout with the diagram that we gave you, please do not hesitate to call, email, or just stop by the office and ask us. Wearing rubber bands, especially at first, can be confusing!

This is an important phase of your therapy. Failure to wear your elastics full time or as instructed will lengthen your treatment time and will make it more difficult to achieve an optimal result. It’s normal for your mouth, teeth, and jaws to be a little sore for the first few days to a week of wear. Furthermore, if you wear your elastics only intermittently (NOT full time) you will have constant discomfort because your teeth don’t have a chance to get used to them, so be sure to keep the elastics in FULL TIME! Wearing your elastics for several hours, and then taking them off for awhile, then putting them back on, etc., will make your teeth more resistant to moving in the right direction and slow down or stop your treatment progress. In addition to NOT moving the teeth, this part-time wear will keep your teeth constantly sore. Just do the right thing and wear them 24/7!

NEVER DOUBLE UP ON YOUR ELASTICS, even if you skip a day of wear. It may seem to make sense, but will actually SLOW DOWN tooth movement and your progress.

If you have any questions about your elastics, what they do, or how to wear them, please be sure to ask us. We want your orthodontic treatment to go as quickly and smoothly as it can with the best result obtainable. Proper rubber band wear is a big step towards successful completion.

10 Best and Worst Valentine's Treat with Braces!

Valentine's day is almost is here!  We want everyone to celebrate love - especially loving your braces. Valentine's Day can be tough on those with braces, so I took a special trip to Target (twist my arm) to find out which treats to love and which to dump.

Top 10 Ranking of Valentine's Treats With Braces

braces valentines treats #1 Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts - Soft and melty, these are usually nice and easy on your braces.  Bonus - a little bit of protein (peanut butter is healthy right?) to counteract the sugar.

braces valentines treats #2 Hershey's Kisses - Soft and melty chocolates are generally okay.  These should have minimal damage to your orthodontic appliances.

braces valentines treats #3 Boxed Chocolates - For the most part, these are pretty safe.  Fudge and nougat should be just fine, but stay clear of the toffee (too hard) and caramel (to sticky) ones.  Request that your valentine get the kind with a handy chocolate identity guide in the box.

braces valentines treat #4 Kit Kats - Soft for the most part, but the wafer crunch can be a little bit risky if you bite it too hard.  Still safer that some of the choices to follow.

braces valentines treats #5 M&M's - Although somewhat melty, the hard candy shell makes these a bit more dangerous than the previously mentioned chocolates.  Eat with caution and stick to the softer chocolate if you can.

braces valentines day #6 Nerds - Hard and crunchy and full of sugar, these aren't your best choice.  They are smaller than some of the other hard candy choices, so maybe a bit less likely to break a bracket.

braces valentines treat #7 Lollipops - A lot of people ask me "Dr. Jill, what if I don't bite it?"  That sounds good in theory, but most of us get to the end of that sucker and just can't help ourselves.  The dreaded combo of both sticky and hard, lolly's are are a no'y.

braces valentines conversation hearts #8 Conversation Hearts - The classic Valentine's Day candy!  Unfortunately, these are just too hard and crunchy to be safe for braces.  Better to pass a "U R Cute" or "Tweet Me" to your secret crush and save yourself an extra trip to the orthodontist for repairs.

braces valentines treats #9 Fun Dip - The flavored sugar crystals should not cause any breakage, but bathing your teeth in pure sugar is definitely putting you at high risk for cavities.  And the too-tempting-to-not-bite dipping stick is hard and crunchy.  This double dose of disaster makes it one of the worst choices for braces-wearers.

braces valentines treat #10 Tootsie Rolls - SO sticky and SO sugary, these little treats are big-time bad even without braces.  Avoid at all costs!

Worst Halloween Candies for Braces!

Around 4 million kids and teens in the US wear braces. That’s 10% of the trick-or-treaters scavenging your neighborhood this Halloween. Having braces can be hard enough. Halloween candy can make it even more difficult. Make it easier for the neighborhood kids this Halloween and avoid giving these candies to kids with braces this Halloween.
Why You Shouldn’t Eat Caramel with Braces
Candy can compromise the strength of braces, resulting in loose bonds, broken wires, or detached brackets. Not only is this painful, but it can extend treatment time, too. And no one wants braces on longer than they need.
“The worst kind of candy for braces is the sticky, chewy kind such as bubble gum and Sour Patch Kids,” said Dr. Michael Teichman. “They stick to the brace and pull it off with every chewing stroke. Every time a brace or bracket breaks, it sets the treatment a step back.”
If you think cavities hurt, imagine how your teeth feel after popping off a bracket!
Here are the candies to watch out for:
CARAMEL
Caramel is one of those terribly sticky candies that Dr. Bukholts refers to. It’s so easy for caramel to get lodged between a tooth and a brace. This can lead to tooth decay from the sugar in the candy sitting on the tooth. It can also loosen brackets or detach them. That is bad news because it means an extra trip to the orthodontist.
TAFFY
Chewy, gummy salt water taffy is a danger with braces. It’s extremely sticky, like caramel, so when it gets stuck behind a wire or globbed onto a bracket, it’s STUCK.
GUM
You know you’re not supposed to eat gum with braces, but do you know why? Gum bends the wires of braces, moving the specific adjustments made to straighten your teeth. Even if you don’t do serious damage to your appliances, overtime the wires will weaken and become less effective. This leads to a longer time in braces.
Wires used today are much more flexible than they used to be, but it’s still a bad habit to start.
HARD CANDIES AND POPCORN
The force used to crunch into uncompromising hard candy and snacks can pop off a bracket. And popcorn kernels are worse! Steer clear or keep yourself from trying to chew, if possible.
LOLLIPOPS
They look so innocent with their bright, swirling colors and inviting patterns. Unfortunately, lollipops, especially large lollipops, are an orthodontist’s nightmare.
THE GOOD NEWS IS CHOCOLATE
Are you wondering “what candy can I eat with braces?!” If you have a heavy heart after reading, reach for a bar of chocolate.
Soft, smooth, delicious chocolate won’t damage your braces, and is less likely to cause tooth decay than other kinds of candy. So, rejoice with a Kit-Kat or a Kiss and keep that smile BOO-TI-FUL!

Guys with Braces – 5 great reasons guys are getting braces

When we think about braces and other orthodontic work, the first picture that often comes to mind usually involves teenagers (or perhaps Katy Perry acting like a teenager).  However, the benefits of straight teeth and a healthy smile aren’t just for kids.
Every year more adults are choosing orthodontic treatment, and a large percentage of those adults are men.
Guys with braces. Are you surprised?  We’re not.  Check out these 5 great reasons why guys are getting braces. We’ll have you in and out before you can say: “Cool story, bro.”

1. You’re in Good Company

More Men Are Getting Orthodontic Treatment Now Than Ever.
Of all of the adults seeking orthodontic treatment including braces 44% are men.  Guys are considering braces for a variety of reasons.  Beyond the obvious and often amazing visual transformation of having straight teeth, braces and other orthodontic treatment can help correct or address other physical issues such as:
  • Chronic Headaches and Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
  • Oral hygiene issues and uneven wearing or even cracking/breaking teeth caused by overcrowding or alignment issues
  • Intestinal and dietary issues caused by the inability to chew properly
Smile and know you’re in good company.  In fact, there are plenty of guys with braces who aren’t afraid to post up a selfie.  There’s a hashtag out there just for you: #boyswithbraces.

2. Guys With Attractive Smiles Are… Well, More Attractive.

And guys with braces have straighter, more attractive smiles.

Many guys wonder if having braces will affect their dating game. For the record, we would totally swipe right for this fine fellow.
It’s no secret anymore that a good-looking smile is one of, if not the most important determining factors that potential mates use to judge if someone is dating material.   In fact, 71% of single women looking for male partners believe that a great, healthy smile is a must-have when it comes to dating.
One of the best ways to make sure a potential mate remembers you is by having a great smile.  According to a Kelton study on first impressions:
“…many Americans say teeth are a standout feature when it comes to what they notice and recall when first meeting someone. About two-thirds of Americans are more likely to remember attractive features than those they find to be unpleasant. Perhaps this is why so many realize a nice smile is important.”

3. Bring Your Smile to Work – And Increase Your Chances For Promotion & Career Success

That Kelton study about smiles and first impressions goes beyond dating.  People who smile (yes, even men who smile) are seen to be more approachable, intelligent, collaborative, popular, and trustworthy.
Have an important meeting or interview coming up? People who smile are more likely to be recognized or remembered, and have an increased chance for being hired or promoted. Make sure your smile will dazzle and impress as much as your resume.
4. Straight Teeth Are Easier to Protect From Sports Injury
Unless you are a professional athlete secretly hoping to make Sports Illustrated’s list of men with toothless smiles, it’s a good idea to wear a mouthguard and protect your teeth and your brain from concussion during sports and other athletic activities.

Teeth that are protruding, overcrowded, or otherwise misaligned are harder to protect even when wearing a mouthguard, and more vulnerable to injuries, cracking, breaking, or even avulsion (that’s a nice way of saying knocked out tooth).
The most effective type of mouthguard is one that is custom made by a dentist or orthodontist to fit your mouth and teeth exactly.  1st Family Dental is a leader in providing athletic and custom-fitted mouthguards in just a few simple steps.

5. Great Orthodontic Treatment Options Means Better, Faster Results
If you’re considering braces or other orthodontic treatment, there are a variety of options available to give you the best possible results.  Along with our outstanding and highly trained orthodontic specialists, we offer the following treatment options at 1st Family Dental:

  • Traditional Braces – these are the most common, metal brackets and wires.  With advancements in techniques and materials, brackets are smaller and lower profile.

  • Clear Braces – just as effective as metal braces, but with the added advantage of stealth.  The brackets are made from tooth-colored ceramiic, and the wires are nearly invisible.
  • Lingual Braces – These custom-fitted brackets made of gold can move your teeth without anyone knowing because they are attached to the lingual, or tongue-side of your teeth.  Lingual braces are just as effective as other types of braces.
  • Invisalign ®  – Straighten your smile with a series of custom, clear, removable aligners.  Invisalign ® is almost invisible and most people don’t even notice.  These custom-made aligners also have the added bonus of serving as whitening trays for at-home treatments.
  • AcceleDent®. – Turbo-charge your braces treatment with a new technology called AcceleDent ®.  This treatment-accelerator helps to move teeth more quickly by using micropulses, or tiny vibrations.  1st Family Dental offers this technology for our adult orthodontic patients to help them to achieve optimal results, while reducing their treatment duration by up to 50%.
With all these great reasons to get orthodontic treatment, what are you GUYS waiting for?
